The development of the website for the 2018 TEDxUofW conference

TEDxUofW is a student organization that strives to bring inspirational and informational TED style talks to the University of Washington in Seattle, in the form of a student-run conference that has been held annually since 2012. Working on the web team with developers, I designed the website and mobile day-of application for the 2018 TEDxUofW conference.

CHALLENGE

My challenge was to redesign the website for the 2018 TEDxUofW conference by improving the usability and including more relevant content, while adding more joy and interactivity to the user experience. Working in a cross-functional environment, my goals also included implementing branding guidelines and working under development constraints.

SOLUTION

I designing high-fidelity website wireframes to hand off to my team's developers, identifying and addressing usability issues in the previous year's website to create a more user-friendly and enjoyable experience.

FEEDBACK SURVEY

My first step was to gather feedback about the original 2017 website from previous team members. This helped me define my main areas of focus for improvement: information and usability.

EXISTING WEBSITES

I looked into existing event websites to get a better sense of how other organizations chose to organize and represent their content, learning the importance of highlighting the conference information (what, where, when is the conference) and speakers (why should people attend the conference).

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

I determined the content and structure of the website by reviewing the structure of the original 2017 website, then constructing the architecture for the new website by moving content to pages that would make more sense and adding relevant information that was previously missing.

WIREFRAMING

I designed a low-fidelity wireframe with a focus on structure and content. In subsequent iterations, I shifted to a focus on visual design and animation, working closely with the design team to incorporate style guidelines.

PAIN POINT:
ABOUT PAGE

The "About" page on the 2017 site originally displayed all three of the descriptions about TED at once. The repetitive elements of this design made it inefficient as well as unengaging for a user to read the text.

To improve this section, I designed a system for a button to change the description, increasing readability and user engagement.

PAIN POINT:
TEAM PAGE

The 2017 "Meet The Team" section originally displayed the team members all at once and took up an overwhelming amount of vertical space, with no way for the user to easily find and access specific teams and team members.

To address this problem, I designed a mini-navigation bar for the team profiles, improving organization and navigation.

REFLECTION

Designing for TEDxUofW was the first time I had worked directly with web developers. I had to learn to adapt my design to what was feasible within our timeframe, as well as understand that every single detail wouldn't make it into the final implementation. Being able to work under real-life circumstances and constraints was a valuable experience.

Given more changes, here are some changes I would've liked to make:

  • Conducting additional research & testing with conference attendees
  • Making the site better visually communicate the year's theme
  • Getting more involved in the promotion of the website and application
